I’m currently working on something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. A comic book workbook that’s laid out in the same format as a comic book. There are a couple of reasons why it’s taken me so long.
First, I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted to do it. I always had to idea to have the layout of the book sort of like Scott McCloud’s book, with comic book panels and a main character (me) explaining what’s going on and how to make a comic.
The second main reason it’s take me so long is because to go along with the workbook, I thought it’d be a great idea to actually do some kind of workshop with the book. But who am I to hold a workshop, right? I haven’t been traditionally published by places like Penguin Random House or Simon & Schuster. I haven’t worked for Marvel or DC Comics. So I had this fear that I didn’t have the proper “rep”, so to speak.
But then I thought, “Wait a minute. I love comics. I want more people to read and love comics. So just make the thing to help people do just that.” I might not be a New York Times Best Selling Cartoonist (yet) but why should that stop me from helping other people learn how to make comics. And in turn, find a deeper appreciation for the comic book medium.
So, yeah, I’m creating the Super Awesome Comic Book Workbook. I’m currently thumbnailing the pages out right now. My hope is that I can release it early next year.
In the mean time, check out my book shop, www.coolcoyotebooks.com for all my comics and novels.
